The offending noise will disappear when you pull the wire to the corresponding cylinder. All this being said, it isn't uncommon for older lifters to begin to "tick" a bit in their old age. The only thing thickening the oil will do is make the engine last a little longer before that wrist pin seizes and destroys the engine. That is IF it is a wrist pin knock. If the knock stops on the dead cylinder it tells you which cylinder it is knocking from. Are all the wrist pins free or is one "tight". piston slap is usually only at low RPMs.

WebOct 16, 2008 · It's definitely not piston slap. I had a Grand Am with the 3.4L that had massive piston slap. The sound this 4.3L makes is totally different. Would a loose wrist pin make a sound similar to rod knock? It's weird cause it goes away once the engine warms up, and even when you hammer the truck, it's whisper quiet.

Mine made a tapping sound for a month or two then the piston basically exploded, ripping the wrist pin out of the piston. If caught early you can get by with changing just the damaged piston.
