In this study, we analyze the global pattern of the diurnal cycle of surface (10 m) winds from the ERA5 reanalysis data. We find that over the land and especially over sand dune regions, the maximal wind speed and wind drift potential (DP) occur during the hours around midday.

WebJun 8, 2024 · However, there is also a considerable amount of evidence showing that an inverted diurnal cycle for wind speed may occur for marine winds, where surface wind speed reaches a maximum overnight and a minimum during the daytime (Yu and Wagner, 1970; Barthelmie, 1991; Barthelmie et al., 1996; Lapworth, 2005, 2011). Webin motions with longer than diurnal periods. A majority of stations is, however, located in the complex terrain where around 40% of the spectral wind power is contained in the subdiurnal frequency range. This part of the spectrum is significantly underestimated by the model, indicating that the downscaling is predominantly a dynamical ...
WebHourly wind measurements collected from 53 moored buoys in the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean array (9°N-8°S, 165°E-180°W) from 1993 through 2002 were used to document seasonal changes of the diurnal and semidiurnal harmonics of surface wind variability. The zonal wind component was dominated by a semidiurnal variation, with a near-uniform WebTypically, due to aerodynamic drag, there is a wind gradient in the wind flow ~100 meters above the Earth's surface—the surface layer of the planetary boundary layer. Wind speed increases with increasing height above the ground, starting from zero due to the no-slip condition. Flow near the surface encounters obstacles that reduce the wind speed, …

The results show large diurnal variations in surface wind on the TP. WebJul 17, 2024 · As there is no diurnal SST and thereby no diurnal ΔQ cycle during these months as shown in Figure 3f, this cycle is determined by the atmospheric humidity, meaning that the near surface boundary layer is moister during the nighttime and drier during the daytime. Conversely, the winds are elevated at nighttime and begin …
